Start with the icons, head to Edinburgh Castle for the big views and bigger stories, then amble down the Royal Mile past St Gile’s Cathedral and it’s crown spire. Venture down Victoria Street, the colourful curved lane above Grassmarket and finish at the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

Find your viewpoint. Catch golden hour from Calton Hill, or go all in on Arthur’s Seat for the city at your feet. If you prefer a more gentle perch, climb the Scott Monument or take in the skyline from the free National Museum of Scotland rooftop terrace.

Wander the hidden corners. Dean Village feels like a fairytale hideaway minutes from the city centre, Circus Lane is a beautiful cobbled lane and Advocates’s close is a quiet atmospheric detour. Slow things down in the Royal Botanic Garden or follow the Water of Leith walkway.

Finish your trip wit something fun, play with perspective at Camera Obscura and World of Illusions, then head to Leith waterfront for good food and a local feel.
