Edinburgh in the Spring - The Ultimate Itinerary.

Spring is officially here, and Edinburgh’s trees are just starting to blossom, which means there’s even more reason to get outside and explore the gorgeous city of Edinburgh.

With the help of this thorough in-depth guide, Calton Living are giving you the Ultimate Edinburgh Itinerary for the Spring - let’s get started.

Places to Roam

When you're visiting Edinburgh the list of places to visit is endless and everyone you ask has a different recommendation. But where are the best places to visit? We’ll tell you.

Princes Street Garden is an excellent option for a stroll in the Spring, the cherry blossoms are in full bloom and the view of Edinburgh Castle is GLORIOUS. Aside from the perfect picnic opportunities and beautiful bird songs, the best part about this is the park is entirely free to roam around. The only part of Princes Street that you may fancy splurging your money on is the quaint cafe dotted alongside the high street. Not only this but the Scott Monument throughout the day offers tours and viewing opportunities from the top of the Monument. Imagine the beautiful views on a sunny spring day - priceless!

The Royal Mile is a great opportunity to appreciate the Georgian buildings of Edinburgh, and of course, shop until you drop. The mile offers a range of different gift shops and of course access to the Castle. One notable visit is Makar’s Market which showcases independent businesses stalls throughout the week. Whether it's handmade jewellery or authentic Scottish gifts - it’s the place to visit.

The Water by Leith Walkway is a great way to stroll to Dean Village and get some picturesque shots of the gorgeous hidden treasure that is Dean Village. Grab yourself a refreshing Gelato from Joelato in Stockbridge and begin your venture to the waterway.

Blackford Hill is not the most popular hill in Edinburgh but well worth a hike for its city views and sunset opportunities. If you want to take in the landscape of the city without hiking Arthur’s seat - Blackford Hill is a great opportunity. Also fantastic for a lunchtime picnic so pack your Irn Bru and Haggis and cheese, red pesto sandwiches (A big recommendation from us!)

The Meadows, a fantastic strip of greenery that surrounds some fantastic independent bookshops such as book-lovers Bookshop, Edinburgh’s only romantic bookshop, and Tills a magnificent second-hand and new bookshop - fantastic for academic research. On the meadows, however, make sure to pop a bottle of fizz and read your favourite book. Have kids? Fantastic, the Meadows have a HUGE park fit to entertain any child.

Princes Street Gardens.

Places to Eat

Every city has a Wetherspoons and a McDonalds - so here are some independent businesses you can support in the heart of Edinburgh.

Toast Tea, Holyrood Road.

Toast Tea is a great option if you love Japanese-style cuisine and a fresh fruity drink. Whether it's crispy chicken toast sandwiches or delicious kimchi they have you covered. It’s especially good for vegetarian options as they offer a delicious crispy ‘chicken’ alternative - try it and let us know that you loved it too!

Toastology is you guessed it, a toastie-based shop in the heart of Stockbridge - whether you’re a haggis lover, a simple cheddar or even vegan requirements Toastology probably has an option you’ll DEVOUR (because nobody ever leisurely eats a toastie).

Casserole Wang another Japanese recommendation for a build-your-own hotpot! Simply grab your basket and build your hotpot, and they will cook it for you after you have selected your broth of choice. They even allow you to build your dipping pot. Delicious.

Luxford Burgers If you love burgers, you will love Luxford burgers. Lux is in the name for a reason and it’s because they sure are luxurious and HUGE. No matter your preference, there’s an option for you.

Edinburgh Street Food is the perfect option if you’re visiting the playhouse, or finished up shopping in ST James’ Quarter. Order at your table from a range of different restaurants from seafood boils to cheesy pizza and refreshing drinks - everyone can order what they want! Very reasonably priced too.
