The ‘Ber Months in Edinburgh
After a long, busy August filled with performances and events, Edinburgh has been long overdue for a slower, chillier season.
With September finally upon us, and the leaves beginning to change colour, we thought it was only right to showcase the perfect guide to embracing the colder months in the city. From your wardrobe to your must-visit coffee shop.
Autumn leaves are beginning to fall in Circus Lane, Edinburgh.
All Wrapped up?
To enjoy the colder months in the city, start with a cosy, season-appropriate outfit. Edinburgh offers many authentic Scottish clothing shops ideal for browsing winter and autumn wardrobe staples.
A great recommendation is Brora located on Frederick Street. Brora is a fantastic Scottish chain specialising in cashmere clothing. Often, as you stroll by the windows, you will see gorgeous sweater vests and knit pieces - you’ll certainly find something to your liking.
Some of our other notable favourites include:
Kestin menswear is located in Stockbridge, stocking authentic Scottish knits from locations such as Inverness, Dumfries, and Kilmarnock.
Rosypenguin, a female-founded business located on Jeffrey Street. Specialising in women’s fashion, they stock the perfect autumnal tones for this season. They also host pre-loved Thursday events, encouraging customers to bring in old items and shop second-hand.
Finally, Torn Vintage on Bread Street, opposite the iconic Vennel viewpoint, for signature vintage pieces, to help build your seasonal outfits.
Edinburgh Photo Hotspots
Maybe we’re biased, but when it comes to Edinburgh, it’s hard to find a street that doesn’t hit the mark in Autumn and winter. When the leaves start to fall and the air feels that oh so crisper, and the stoned buildings sparkle in the morning sun - it’s hard to beat the city.
That being said, we do have our favourites - so we thought we’d save you the trouble of pinning inspiration to your Pinterest board and curate a list to ensure your Instagram and photo albums capture the city of Edinburgh perfectly. Some of them I’m sure you’ve heard of - but some may surprise you.
Circus Lane
Circus Lane, located in the neighbourhood of Stockbridge, is known for its stunning views. No matter the seasons, the flowers and St Stephen’s Church make for the perfect photo.
This particular spot has become immensely popular amongst tourists and still provides access through the lane, so for the best photos, we recommend early mornings and evenings to avoid foot traffic.
The Vennel Viewpoint
The Vennel viewpoint is the perfect spot to capture a picture of the historic Edinburgh Castle. This famous close has also been the scene of a recent Netflix hit, One Day, where characters Emma and Dexter exchange numbers.
Follow the steps to the top of the Vennel to secure the perfect photo.
St Cuthbert’s Kirkyard
The lesser-known Kirkyard of Edinburgh, located on Lothian Road, not only does it house gorgeous architecture, including The Parish Church of St Cuthbert, but it also has a few ‘secret’ glimpses of the Castle.
A great way to take in the surroundings without the foot traffic.
Dean Village
Of course, we had to mention Dean Village. Centred around the Water of Leith, it’s best known for its ‘hidden-village’ character. The colourful stone houses and, of course, the water that runs through it make the perfect picturesque view of the city.
Don’t forget to also check out:
Victoria Street - Also known as the Harry Potter street, located at the top of Grassmarket.
Blackford Hill - Based in Morningside, it gives a great view of the City.
Holyrood Park - Located in Holyrood, it showcases the iconic Arthur’s Seat & is a great place for a stroll.
Hot Drinks & Pastry
When you come to Edinburgh, it’s probably harder to avoid coffee shops than it is to spot them, which means it’s even harder to choose your staple go-to coffee when you’re exploring the city. Here is a curated list of some of our favourite Coffee & Pastry shops around the city.
Lannan Bakery
Located in Stockbridge, Lannan Bakery is a cosy spot loved for its fresh, flaky croissants, indulgent custard slices and spiced cardamom buns. Queues form early as treats often sell out, but it’s always worth the wait. Warm, welcoming and full of flavour, it’s a must-visit in Edinburgh.
The Palmerston
The Palmerston, found in the heart of Edinburgh’s West End, is well known for its fresh bakery and makes a wonderful place to enjoy breakfast or pick up something tasty to start the day.
Soderberg
Söderberg is a cosy Scandinavian bakery in Edinburgh, loved for its cinnamon buns, sourdough, and great coffee. Bright cafés and friendly service make it a perfect stop for brunch or a sweet treat.
The Pantry
The Pantry in Bruntsfield is a cosy, welcoming café serving hearty breakfasts, brunch plates and great coffee. Loved by locals for its friendly service and relaxed vibe, it’s the perfect spot for pancakes, avocado toast or a leisurely weekend treat.

Now that you’ve planned your seasonal adventure in Edinburgh, where will you be staying?
Of course, we couldn’t resist highlighting some of our unique properties hidden in and around the city. You’re so welcome.

Tucked away next to a converted, 18th-century papermill, this spacious top-floor apartment makes a comfortable base for a city break. Situated in a quiet, residential street, a mile from the city centre, there are plenty of neighbourhood coffee shops and restaurants a short walk away, and it’s just a 20-minute stroll into the city.

Lady Stairs Close, also known as the Writer’s Attic, is a charming, hidden gem nestled in one of the famous, historic courtyards in the heart of Edinburgh's atmospheric Old Town.
Dean Bank Lane
Riverside Hideaway is a cosy, charming home from home with an enviable location. The bohemian neighbourhood village of Stockbridge is a true hidden gem within the city of Edinburgh, where you will be spoilt for choice if you’re a foodie, like to get your indie coffee fix, discover independent book shops and interiors stores, or while away a few hours in a traditional pub or gastropub.
